How has the migration crisis in Belarus affected trucking

For the past two weeks, the attention of European leaders has been focused on the problem of migrants from the Middle East, who arrived in Belarus in the number of up to 4,000 people. During this period, they attempted several times to break through the border to continue their journey to Germany.

The closure of the Kuznitsa-Bruzgi checkpoint on 9.11.21 had a negative impact on the speed of border crossing. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawicki's threat to completely close the border with Belarus has not yet been implemented. Even without this, transport logistics is very sensitive to such political processes.

And it seems that the crisis has subsided, but the Poles are apparently intensively checking all road transport, and so far there is a 25-kilometer traffic jam from Russian trucks at the Bobrovniki checkpoint in the direction of Poland. The increased waiting time (300-500 euros downtime) for the transition to 80 hours poses a significant risk of disruptions in supply chains and rising prices for end users. According to the Kommersant newspaper, about 10% of Russian imports in physical terms pass through the border of the European Union and the Republic of Belarus, including essential goods, food, medical products, packaging and equipment, and more than 90% of deliveries are carried out by motor transport.

On November 18, representatives of the foreign business association Advisory Council on Foreign Investment (Bayer, Samsung, Danone, The Coca-Cola Company, Unilever, etc.) appealed to the government to help solve the problem of trucking from the European Union to Russia and to facilitate interdepartmental coordination to enhance cargo traffic across the Russian-Latvian border. The government's press service, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Industry and Trade have so far refrained from commenting to journalists.

While the further route of illegal migrants (repatriation to the territory of origin or obtaining official refugee status in the EU) has not yet been determined, we note another increase in prices for FTL road transport. Many carriers adjust routes to avoid congestion. Several days of downtime are included in freight rates, which are already breaking all records this fall.
